Ingredients

  • - 1 loaf French or Italian bread (about 16 inches long)
  • - 6 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature
  • - 6 cloves fresh garlic, finely minced
  • - 3 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
  • - ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • - ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • - 3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • - ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika
  • - Small pinch red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Soften butter to room temperature by leaving it on the counter for 30-45 minutes until easily spreadable. Peel and mince garlic cloves as finely as possible for even distribution throughout the butter. Rinse and thoroughly dry fresh flat-leaf parsley, then chop finely.
  2. 2Combine softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, grated Parmesan, paprika, and red pepper flakes in a medium bowl. Mix thoroughly with a fork until all ingredients are evenly incorporated and the mixture appears uniform in color, about 2 minutes. Allow this garlic butter blend to rest at room temperature for 15-20 minutes so flavors can properly meld together.
  3. 3Position oven rack to upper-middle position and preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  4. 4Slice bread in half lengthwise, creating two long halves with cut sides facing up. If bread surface appears moist, gently pat dry with paper towels to ensure butter adheres properly.
  5. 5Spread garlic butter mixture generously and evenly across both cut surfaces of bread, making sure to reach all the way to the edges. Use the back of a spoon or offset spatula for smooth, even coverage.
  6. 6Place bread halves cut-side up on prepared baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven until edges begin turning golden and butter is fully melted and bubbling, about 8-10 minutes.
  7. 7Switch oven to broil setting on high. Broil bread for 1-3 minutes, watching constantly, until surface becomes golden brown and slightly crispy with lightly charred spots. Remove immediately when desired color is achieved to prevent burning.
  8. 8Transfer bread to cutting board and slice into 2-inch wide pieces using a serrated knife. Arrange on a serving platter with cut edges visible for attractive presentation. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
