Health Benefits

Ingredients

  • - 1 large sweet yellow onion (Vidalia preferred)
  • - 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • - 2 tbsp paprika
  • - 2 tsp garlic powder
  • - 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • - 1 tbsp salt
  • - 1 tsp black ground pepper
  • - 2 large eggs
  • - 1 cup whole buttermilk
  • - Vegetable oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. 11. Trim onion ends and carefully slice from top, cutting into 16 evenly spaced vertical sections without cutting through bottom root.
  2. 22. Gently spread onion petals, creating signature "blooming" shape. Soak in ice water for 10 minutes to help petals open.
  3. 33. Combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper in large mixing bowl.
  4. 44. Whisk eggs and buttermilk in separate bowl until smooth.
  5. 55. Drain onion thoroughly. Dredge completely in egg mixture, then coat generously with seasoned flour mixture.
  6. 66. Heat vegetable oil to 375°F in large heavy-bottomed dutch oven.
  7. 77. Carefully lower onion root-side up into hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. 88. Remove and drain on wire rack lined with paper towels.
  9. 99. Mix dipping sauce ingredients until well combined.
